I often share things with you to make the creation process easier and more fun. And today, I wanted to share some of the actual items that help me carve out my own little space, that gets me excited and focused whenever I find time to write and work on my children’s books.
Please note that you don’t need an actual office! A small corner or space you can call your own is more than enough to be infused with your own beautiful and creative personality. Because if you create a happy and joyful environment that you actually like to be in, you will find that you will WANT to spend time to create! I promise!
So here’s a small glimpse into my writing space to hopefully inspire your own. I hope you love it and find some of these things helpful and useful for your own home.
AND REMEMBER:
- You don’t need an actual office to make a small space your ‘own’
- Adding more ‘you’ into a space will make you want to spend more time in it
- A clean and organized environment will help you get your creative juices flowing
- Staying organized is half the battle
- Remember the importance of rewarding yourself
14 Things I Can’t Be Without In My Perfect Writing Space:
1. A Powerful & Inspiring Quote
I really enjoy inspirational quotes, and my perfect writing space wouldn’t be complete without one! My favorite one reads “MAKE YOURSELF PROUD!” It’s strategically placed right in front of me, so I can see it whenever I look up from my computer.
- “Want something you’ve never had? Do something you’ve never done.”
- “Be somebody who makes everybody feel like a somebody.”“
- Don’t be afraid to fail. Be afraid not to try.”
I found a print of each above and linked it for you. I always select the smallest size to see the most cost-effective option, or simply design, print, and frame it myself.
2. My Inspiring Mug of Fuel
My turquoise coffee mug reads “Hustle Juice.” I got mine from Target, which is no longer available, but I found a similar one right here on Amazon. This mug makes me so silly happy whenever I pour coffee into it. So go find your own magical power mug! The more the words printed on it mean to you, the more powerful it will be.
3. My Calendar To Stay Organized
I use a very simple calendar book or planner to stay organized. This one is imperative to be able to stay on top of my to-dos and scheduled meetings.
I prefer big planners, like this one, that comes in a number of different colors. This is also the place I write down my day’s or week’s goals, so I can cross them off once I’ve completed them. I love doing this, because it provides me with a sense of accomplisment and gives me a visual of my progress.
You could use and do this to schedule the creation of your book’s individual pages, images, or chapters, for example.
Planning ahead and staying organized is half the battle, because what gets written down is more likely to get done!
4. My Amazing Power-Desk
I purchased this adjustable laptop desk quite some time ago. I did a lot of research before I decided on getting this one, and it is truly amazing. I put it directly on top of my regular desk or table. It allows me to alternate between standing and sitting.
It is fairly inexpensive compared to other options, super light, and quickly and easily adjustable. It even has a little, detachable mouse tray that can be placed on either side. And this model is particularly useful if you don’t have much space, since it can be folded completely flat and stowed under the couch.
5. My Cozy Lap-Desk to Take Things Outside My Perfect Writing Space
I received this particular Lap Desk from my parents-in-law last year. It’s a perfect option when I want to spend some time on the couch, but still want to get some work done and keep my creative juices flowing.
With this little lap desk, I can now get work done anywhere. My favorite part is the comfortable cusion for my arms to rest on, and the two slits on top to hold my cell phone and eReader. I use this little desk for all sorts of things.
6. My Protective Glasses
I only recently learned about the damage blue light can cause to our eyes. I had no idea! Ever since, I’ve been working with my blue light blocking glasses. They offer many different styles and sizes. Some can even be purchased as reading glasses with different strengths.
The ones I bought for myself right here are pink, but also come in many other colors. They are super light and very comfortable.
I also immediately purchased a pair for Mike as well. His were a bit more expensive, so I made them part of his birthday present.
7. My Trusty Idea Board
So when I’m outlining a new children’s book, I use this one right here. I like this version because it’s half cork and half whiteboard. And the whiteboard is magnetic as well. So it allows me to jot down my thoughts, while also holding pictures and other various visual inspiration.
8. My Rolling Saddle Stool (MY LIFESAVER!)
9. My Cozy Little Desk Lamp
This sturdy little desk lamp comes in a number of different colors, and mint goes beautifully with the colors in my little, perfect writing space.
10. My Powerful Hourglass
I don’t remember where I first learned about this, but this OrgaNice hourglass helps me stay completely focused whenever I use it.
I asked for this particular one for my birthday last year, and I love how it helps me stay focused for 30 whole minutes, during which I don’t allow myself to browse the web, log onto any of my social media, or check my email inbox.
11. My Super-Quiet Mouse
Even though my laptop has a touchpad, I prefer using an actual mouse, especially when I’m formatting and assembling a new book.
I’ve used this Seenda mouse for quite some time now, and really like it. I love it’s unusual color and the fact that it’s wireless.
But what made me purchase it in the first place was it’s advertised noiselessness. None of the button-clicking or wheel-rolling is audible, which is especially helpful when working next to sleeping little guys.
And this particular mouse also comes in a number of different colors.
12. My Thinking Ball
These are my Thinking balls. I’m sure they go by some other name, but that’s what I’m using them for: thinking.
They are super squish-able, super tear-resistant, and perfect for my fidgety hands. And I always have a couple on hand, so I can easily find one whenever I’m in my ‘thinking’ mode.
13. My Magical Book Holder
I originally purchased it for book shows, to be able to showcase my books. But I now use it all the time on my desk.
There are many different and way fancier book holders, but I’m sticking to my small table easel, just because it’s more cost effective and works really great, without being bulky and taking up too much desk space. Give it a try!
14. My Daily Reward
So whenever I spent time working on one of my children’s books, I ‘reward’ myself with a deep tissue massage to release stress, relieve my sore muscles, and to help me relax.
YOUR OWN PERFECT WRITING SPACE
Please note that I acquired these pieces on my list of ‘essentials’ over a period of time. I purchased my saddle chair, for example, over 5 years ago. I didn’t go out and purchase these things all at once. And some of these items I received as gifts as well, so if you find something that you would like for your own perfect writing space, don’t be afraid to ask for it for your birthday, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, or Christmas. Because any one of these pieces would make a wonderful present.
So today, I would like to leave you with this:
- Go and find a beautiful corner in your home and make it your OWN perfect writing space! Believe me – it will make ALL THE DIFFERENCE!
- Please do go and purchase a pair of blue light blocking glasses such as the one I mentioned above. Any pair is better than none.
- And finally, don’t forget to reward yourself! Always take the time to acknowledge your achievements, no matter how small you may think them to be. They are steps toward your goal nonetheless, and therefore always worth celebrating.
Here’s to many creative and beautiful moments in your own Perfect Writing Space, however small it may be.
